Craniosacral Therapy

Here you can read about craniosacral therapy. You can also find information on the use of craniosacral therapy in Denmark.

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle manual therapy, which aims to stimulate the self-healing mechanisms of the body.

With gentle touch craniosacral therapists attempt to remove imbalances and blockages in what they call the cranial rhythm.

The cranial rhythm is the speed of the Cerebrospinal fluid (brain fluid) pulsation between the brain and the spinal cord.

According to craniosacral therapists imbalances and blockages in the cranial rhythm can cause physical and mental disorders.

According to the Danish Association of Craniosacral Therapists users typically approach the craniosacral therapist with the following problems:

  • Stress
  • Concentration difficulties and learning disabilities
  • Headache and migraine
  • Neck, back and pelvic pain
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Hormonal deficits
  • Occlusal function and dental problems

Furthermore, a lot of people approach craniosacral therapists to obtain an increase in their general well-being.

According to the Danish Association of Craniosacral Therapists you can experience an instant effect of craniosacral therapy.

Some people experience an effect of the therapy immediately after the first treatment; while others experience effect after a couple of treatments.

According to the Danish Association of Craniosacral Therapists this depends on the seriousness of the problem you wish to have treated.

The Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library is an international database, which collects and assesses scientific studies on the effectiveness of a treatment.

At present, the Cochrane Library contains no systematic reviews on the effect of craniosacral therapy.

ViFAB keeps abreast of any news in this field published by the Cochrane Library.

According to the Danish Association of Craniosacral Therapists you can as a reaction to craniosacral therapy experience temporary fatigue, relaxation and deep sleep.

A craniosacral therapist typically will not conceive such reactions as adverse effects in the usual sense of the word, but as part of the healing process.

Craniosacral therapy involves light pressure. The pressure is no harder than the equivalence of having a piece of paper placed on your body.

Since craniosacral therapy is a very gentle therapy, according to the Danish Association of Craniosacral Therapists there are no special precautions for you to be aware of in connection with using the therapy.

However, pregnant women at risk of miscarriage should avoid craniosacral therapy.

In Denmark craniosacral therapists are not authorized.

Craniosacral therapist is not a protected title.

When admitted to a Danish hospital you can choose to receive treatment from a craniosacral therapist from outside.

You will have to pay for the treatment yourself.

In 2005 the National Institute of Public Health conducted a survey on the use of among other things craniosacral therapy in the Danish population.

Use of Craniosacral Therapy

  • 1.5% of the Danish population has used craniosacral therapy within the previous year.
  • 3.2% of the Danish population has used craniosacral therapy at some point in life.
