Homeopathy
The founder of classical homeopathy is the German physician Samuel Hahnemann, who lived from 1755 to 1843.
Hahnemann developed the theory that a diluted substance can cure a sick person of the symptoms, which the same substance in a normal concentration will produce in a healthy person.
Thus the substance in question will as act a catalyst for the self-healing mechanisms of the organism.
In keeping with Hahnemann’s theories, a homeopath employs the remedy, which corresponds best to the user’s complex of symptoms.
The homeopath prescribes the remedy in a very small dose. Otherwise there is a risk of aggravation of the symptoms.
According to a survey from 1999 conducted by the Danish Society of Classical Homeopathy, 77% of homeopathy users approach the homeopath with a physical symptom as their main problem.
The most common physical problems are:
- Skin disorders (14%)
- Pain (13%)
- Infections (12%)
Half the users also approach homeopaths with other problems; many of these with mental problems.
The Cochrane Library is an international database, which collects and assesses scientific studies on the effectiveness of a treatment.
Via the link below you can see what Cochrane concludes about the effect of homeopathy.
According to the Danish Society of Classical Homeopathy you may experience a brief aggravation of your symptoms in the beginning of a sequence of homeopathic treatments.
However, according to the society, these are not adverse effects in the usual sense of the word. The reactions are more likely to be part of the healing process.
According to the Danish Society of Classical Homeopathy there are no special precautions for you to be aware of in connection with using homeopathy.
Homeopathic Medicinal Products and Interaction
You should remember to inform you general practitioner if you are taking homeopathic remedies in combination with conventional drugs.
A homeopathic remedy contains only a very small dose of the active substance. Thus the risk of interaction is proportionately small.
However, as a precaution your general practitioner should be informed of your use of homeopathic medicinal products.
In Denmark Classical homeopaths are not authorized.
When admitted to a Danish hospital you can choose to receive treatment from a homeopath from outside.
You will have to pay for the treatment yourself.
In 2005 the National Institute of Public Health conducted a survey on the use of among other things homeopathy in the Danish population.
Use of Homeopathy
- 1.1% of the Danish population has used homeopathy within the previous year.
- 3.6% of the Danish population has used homeopathy at some point in life.
The Typical User
As yet there exist no surveys, which form at clear picture of the typical user of homeopathy.
