Kinesiology
Kinesiology is a method, which combines modern western physiology, anatomy and kinetics with eastern theories about the energy pathways (meridians) of the human body.
The fundamental idea of kinesiology is that the debilitation of an organ is accompanied by the debilitation of a muscle.
By testing the strength of your muscles in various situations the kinesiologist examines whether you have any emotional or physical imbalances and blockages. Thus the kinesiologist lets your body reveal your problems.
Balancing
Once the kinesiologist has unveiled any imbalances or blockages, the object is to restore the balance.
Kinesiologists have various techniques for balancing:
- Massage of acupuncture points
- Mental techniques
- Physical exercises
- Homeopathic remedies
- Dietary supplements
- Dietary advice
In Denmark kinesiology is used as an element in the treatment of many different physical and mental symptoms.
According to the association ‘Danish Kinesiologists’ users typically approach kinesiologists with the following problems:
- Allergic reactions
- Learning disabilities
- Back problems
- Mild depression and mood swings
- Exam anxiety
- Stress
Some users also approach kinesiologists to enhance personal development or to prevent illness and increase energy.
According to ‘Danish Kinesiologists’ you must adhere to the kinesiologist’s prescribed home program for balancing in order to achieve effect from applied kinesiology.
The Cochrane Library
The Cochrane Library is an international database, which collects and assesses scientific studies on the effectiveness of a treatment.
At present, the Cochrane Library contains no systematic reviews on the effect of kinesiology.
ViFAB keeps abreast of any news in this field published by the Cochrane Library.
In Denmark kinesiologists are not authorized.
Titles
‘Kinesiologist’ is not a protected title.
‘DK Kinesiologist’ and ‘Professional Practicing Kinesiologist’ are protected titles. This means that a therapist can use these titles only if he or she has completed the required training.
When admitted to a Danish hospital you can choose to receive treatment from a kinesiologist from outside.
You will have to pay for the treatment yourself.
In 2005 the National Institute of Public Health conducted a survey on the use of among other things kinesiology in the Danish population.
Use of Kinesiology
- 0.7% of the Danish population has used kinesiology within the previous year.
- 3.5% of the Danish population has used kinesiology at some point in life.
The Typical User
As yet there exist no surveys, which form at clear picture of the typical user of kinesiology.
