None of the Cochrane reviews on aromatherapy, music therapy and other sensory stimulation therapies report a positive effect of the treatment.
The following treatments show a tendency towards a possible positive effect. However, the evidence is insufficient and cannot form the basis of general recommendations:
Force platform feedback for standing balance training after stroke
Music for stress and anxiety reduction in coronary heart disease patients
Music interventions for improving psychological and physical outcomes in cancer patients
Music therapy for acquired brain injury
Music therapy for autistic spectrum disorder
Pain control in first trimester surgical abortion
None of the Cochrane reviews on aromatherapy, music therapy and other sensory stimulation can conclude with certainty that the treatments are ineffective.
The main conclusion of the majority of the Cochrane reviews about aromatherapy, music therapy and other sensory stimulation is that there exists no solid evidence to determine the effectiveness of the treatments.
Some treatments seem promising, but due to methodological weaknesses in the studies there is no certain way to establish weather the promising results owe to an error or the treatments are genuinely effective.
