ViFAB is a center under the Danish Ministry of Health and Prevention.

ViFAB's Research Grant

ViFAB subsidizes researchers who work on projects within the field of alternative medicine.

The objective is to encourage Danish research in alternative medicine to benefit the Danish population.

How large are the Amounts

Since 2001, ViFAB has annually had DKK one million to distribute to research projects.

The annual amount has several times been supplemented with extra funds, including a DKK 10 million grant in 2004.

A total of DKK 23,3 million have been distributed in the period 2001-2008.

The grant is distributed to researchers outside ViFAB, for example, researchers attached to a university or a research unit at a Danish hospital.

Where does the Money come from

The grant is stipulated in the Danish Finance Act.

How often is the Grant distributed

ViFAB distributes the grant in connection with an application round, which takes place once a year.

Which Types of Alternative Medicine are studied

The majority of the research projects subsidized by ViFAB in the period 2001-2008 have studied the following types of alternative medicine:

  • Acupuncture (19 percent)
  • Herbal medicinal products (9 percent)
  • Healing (9 percent)

A large number of the projects include more than one type of alternative therapy (21 percent).

What are the Sizes of the Projects

ViFAB has subsidized small, medium and large research projects alike.

A number of the projects are pilot studies, which indicate to the researchers whether it will be worthwhile to set up a large-scale study.

Research Groups

ViFAB also subsidizes two groups of researchers from the University of Copenhagen and the University of Southern Denmark with just under DKK 10 million. The groups primarily do research into alternative therapy in relation to cancer and sclerosis.
